Anitox Maxi-Mil Milling Efficiency Program

With many raw material prices climbing to ever increasing heights and feed compounders struggling to manage costs and maintain margins, Anitox, a world leader in bio-security and milling efficiency solutions for the animal feed industry is reporting strong demand for its Maxi-Mil programme.

In addition to increasing mill output, reducing processing losses and energy consumption, Maxi-Mil improves pellet yield, quality and texture, reduces the requirement for binders, lowers equipment maintenance costs, minimizes wastage, optimises the shelf life of feed, whilst reduced Fines aids improved feed conversion, palatability and growth rates.

Maxi-Mil A, the product which forms the basis of the programme, is a solution of organic acids and surfactants with mould-inhibiting properties. Precisely applied to feed in the mixer by purpose-built equipment supplied, installed and maintained by Anitox, at a rate determined by specific mill requirements, Maxi-Mil improves conditioning through increased thermal conductivity, lubricates the feed through the pellet press, increases moisture retention during cooling process and inhibits mould growth during storage.

Trials conducted with feed manufacturers on four continents have demonstrated average improvements of 71.1% in the retention of added moisture, 8.0% in press throughput and 2.9% in quality, with average reductions of 12.8% in energy consumption and 35.7% in press consumable costs. As commodity and other raw material prices show little sign of falling, which feed compounder can afford not to be attracted to the potential savings that such improvements could bring?

Datastor Moisture Manager 4000

IT’S NOT ABOUT ADDING EXTRA MOISTURE IT’S ABOUT THE QUAILITY OF THE FEED FOR EACH & EVERY BATCH FOR EVERY PRODUCTION RUN.

INTELLIGENT MOISTURE CONTROL WILL SAVE ON ENERGY COSTS.

Introduction

The control system at a typical Feed Mill injects liquids into the batch mixers with opportunities to add further moisture downstream at the Press Conditioner. The Feed Factory Manger calculates the moisture % expected loss at certain parts of the process i.e. grinding and modifies the formulation to add the liquid % that’s to be added at the mixer and other addition points. This leads to varying moisture levels within finished feed with some time too much moisture and sometimes too little moisture; both can have an adverse effect on the quality and consistence of the finished feed. Results from the Labourites show this to vary from site to site. Other contributing factors are the seasons along with varying ambient temperature and humidity.

Considerations

The Animal Feed Manufacturer needs to consider the welfare of the animals it feeds and therefore dilution of minerals/supplements that are added to the feeds are not an option.

The production of good quality feed is more important that just adding moisture, if you can’t measure it you can’t control it.

By controlling the moisture added to the mixed meal and not just adding extra moisture to the batches the downstream equipment will not have to work so hard to Pellet the Meal or remove excess moisture in the Coolers thus saving on energy cost.

Solution

The legally allowed finished feed moisture % is downloaded (0-14%) to the control system as part of the formulation. Parameters are available for each destination group (Press line, Meals etc) to specify the correct factor to cater for expected gains/losses. The formulation will not include any mixer moisture correction liquid target.

When a batch arrives at the batch mixer the control system will measure the moisture % in the mixed meal to obtain the actual moisture content in that batch. The control system will then add the required amount of liquid to the mixer to achieve the finished feed moisture %. Once the mixer time complete the batch will transfer to the under-hopper and through to the Pellet Meals bin or Meals route.

Each and every batch will be measured for its actual moisture % and this will be continually fed back to the control system to allow constant moisture control.

The target and actual moisture % will be stored as part of the batch report in both hard and electronic copies.

How to increase value without changing the existing process?

-Intelscan introduces continuous moisture control for animal feed

The Intelscan on-line microwave moisture sensor is usually installed at pet food, fish feed and wood pellet factories before and after the dryer and inside the cooler. This allows improved control of moisture content in real time.

Left: "After searching for 20 years for reliable means of measuring moisture, temperature and density of products, Intelscan have come up with the solution for feed manufacturers. We now have an instant and continuous display of the quality of the finished product. The iScan on-line microwave moisture sensor from Intelscan is now an integral part of our quality system," Mr. Chris I’Anson, Chairman. I’Anson Bros Ltd (pictured with Ged Hall, I’Anson Bros Ltd Operations Manager)

Working closely with clients in animal feed production, Intelscan is now introducing a new and improved way to continually measure moisture content in feed and automatically control the water dosing. "We have seen big increase in value, both in terms of savings in energy and less mechanical wear and tear but also in much higher product yields," explains Olafur H. Jonsson, managing director at Intelscan.

Products which are too wet (above target moisture level) have higher risk of mould, shorter storage and cause customer dissatisfaction. On the other hand, products which are too dry (below target moisture level) lead to unnecessary energy consumption, increased die wear and wasted dry substance.

The feed is continually measured for moisture as it exits the mixer. The Intelscan AquaSmart water dosing software automatically calculates the required amount of water to be added to the mix, if needed, to maintain the required moisture level. The software also controls the water valves to ensure that the correct amount of water is added. The water content of the finished feed is measured again in the cooling process for a "closed loop" moisture control.

"One of our customer records profit increase, per year of over €122.000, with improved measurement and control of water content. He could add 0,67% more water into the feed and still be consistently under the allowed target moisture level," says Olafur H. Jonsson, managing director of Intelscan.
