Redefining Trace Mineral Supplementation Trace mineral nutrition has traditionally been viewed as supplying enough to prevent deficiency symptoms. Today, with ever increasing production expectations and higher genetics, simply avoiding deficiency is no longer enough. Trace minerals must now be made available in the right form at the right levels to achieve optimum health, production and reproduction. Recognising these more challenging requirements, Alltech has developed products to meet the needs of modern livestock farming. Bioplex™ Trace Minerals The Bioplex Trace Minerals allow maximum absorption and storage in body tissues to provide the essential reserve of nutrients at times of greatest need. Recent studies have demonstrated that, even where animals are supplemented at the published allowances for trace minerals, replacement of the inorganic sources with Bioplex Trace Minerals has yielded significant improvements in performance. Sel-Plex™ Sel-Plex is the only organic selenium yeast to have been reviewed and approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the US for use in poultry, pig and ruminant diets. Unlike the transition metals, selenium cannot be securely bonded to amino acids to form a “chelate”. Sel-Plex selenium exists as part of the amino acid structure itself – just as it does in nature – and is the form best suited for animals to absorb, store and utilise. It is applied predominantly by mixing into animal feed supplements or, in certain areas, it is sprayed directly onto the land. Shepherd Widnes, represented in the UK by their agents S+A Blackwell Ltd, are one of the world’s major manufacturers of cobalt salts. Both Shepherd and Blackwell have full ISO 9002 approval and are long established suppliers into this important market. Cobalt Carbonate – both 51% monohydrate and 46% grade – are produced in campaigns on a regular basis at Widnes, so that delivery is often ex-stock or, at least, within two weeks. In addition, we supply a 21% premix, using the 51% monohydrate as the Cobalt source. Packing is in 25 kg bags, although other forms are available on request. Full technical back-up is available, and you will find us a helpful and enthusiastic – as well as competitive – partner. The importance of manufacturing high quality, consistent products that are fully traceable is recognised by Tessenderlo. The product range consists of:
Halite Rock Salt – mined in the UK and available in two grades. This product has been proven in UK feeds for several years as a consistent and cost effective source of salt. Exal – sepiolite clay registered as a binder but also improves the nutritional quality of feeds. It is also used as an inert carrier for vitamins, trace elements, enzymes etc. due to its low reactivity. SPLF is a further refined form of sepiolite that is used to improve the flow characteristics and feed value of liquid feeds. Protinov Chelated Trace Elements – The T.E.P.® range of products are manufactured by the hydrolysis of GMO-free soya bean meal to produce highly digestible trace element chelates. C&H Nutrition is a UFAS-approved feed trade-marketing partner for a variety of added value mineral and trace element feed ingredients, supplied from both UK and international sources. Macro-mineral inputs include AGMA FG85 calcined magnesite, the quality-assured, proven highly available magnesium source distributed in the UK and Ireland on behalf of Spanish producer Magnesitas de Rubian. Sodium products are available too in the form of 100% Pure Dried Vacuum (PDV) salt and the proven feed grade sodium bicarbonate, Alkakarb. C&H Nutrition is also an established supplier of trace element additives – particularly the OPTiMINS chelated mineral range. OPTiMINS superior chelation chemistry ensures that the mineral partner remains bound and stable in solution, even under the variable pH conditions prevailing throughout the digestive process. Strength of chelation is also matched by consistency of product performance, with target animal trials confirming improvements in reproductive parameters and immune status. The trace mineral range also includes ferrous sulphate (monohydrate, granular) and two sodium selenite-based premixes. The ChanSe premixes (1% and 4.5%) draw on a purer form of sodium selenite with more tightly defined granulometry than competitive products, so enhancing both safety and mixing quality. Feeding concepts and product specifications are developed and controlled by the company’s team of qualified animal nutritionists. Three key areas of interest at present are as follows: • The Frank Wright Natureblend range of mineral supplements for organic ruminant livestock, approved by the Soil Association, has been carefully formulated to balance the diets of general organic production systems. The approved mineral sources provide a balanced supply of phosphorus, magnesium, salt and calcium essential for livestock. • CAB Corrector Complete has been designed to maintain proper mineral nutrition of the transition cow. Feeding CAB Corrector Complete pre-calving allows for high calcium diets which may help prevent metabolic problems such as milk fever, retained placenta, displaced abomasum and ketosis, thus improving dry matter intakes and reducing the post-calving negative energy balance, In turn, milk yield and fertility will be less likely to be impaired. • Leading the way in reducing the environmental burden from phosphorus excretion from farm animals, Frank Wright Ltd have embraced the lower phosphorus feeding rates for dairy cows now recommended in America, Holland and Germany. As a subsidiary of the Kemira Group, GrowHow is part of an integrated chain of production spanning from raw materials to the creation of products giving consistent high quality. We are committed to providing high-performance products and innovative solutions for our customers in the feed and food chain. BOLIFOR Feed Minerals Kemira GrowHow offers a comprehensive range of quality minerals suitable for all types of feeds and species of animals. Bolifor Inorganic Feed Phosphates Kemira GrowHow is a leading producer of inorganic feed phosphates. We offer a variety of highly digestible phosphates with a choice of calcium-to-phosphorus ratios, as well as phosphates with no calcium. Bolifor Magnesium Supplements Magnesium, a key mineral in animal nutrition, is available in a digestible and palatable BOLIFOR form in different combinations with calcium, sodium and phosphorus. BOLIFOR Feed Minerals - the preferred choice Minerals are a small but vital part of animal feed. Though all but regular feedstuffs contain minerals, dietary mineral supplements are still necessary for modern, high- yielding animals. The addition of inorganic feed phosphates is an easy, reliable way of ensuring bone strength, fast growth and high productivity. Magnesium is indispensable for normal muscle function. It is typically added to ruminant diets to prevent grass tetany. Supplementation can be beneficial also in pig, poultry and horse diets. Concentrated animal production causes environmental problems when the manure applied to agricultural land contains more nutrients or minerals than could be taken up by crops. Both legislative and nutritional measures have been introduced to alleviate this problem. Phosphorus is of major concern, why it should be fed in adequate amounts and in a form that can be well utilised by animals. High digestibility and purity make Kemira GrowHow’s feed minerals the preferred choice. MAACs are chemically well defined chelates, in which one mole of mineral is chelated or bonded to two moles of amino acids. In farm animals, this type of chelation confers “protection” on the mineral through the digestive tract. In addition, the chelate has a sufficiently low molecular weight to enable it to be absorbed intact. Consequently MAACs have superior availability to inorganic minerals, which makes them useful sources of nutritionally important elements, particularly in dietary situations where mineral absorption is compromised by competition or antagonisms from other nutrients. EU registration of trace elements is a prerequisite to their use in feedingstuffs. Albion’s Iron, Manganese, Copper and Zinc MAACs have been registered in the EU as permitted sources of trace elements. MAACs are GMO free, as demonstrated by the use of Identity Preserved Certified (IPC) hydrolysed soya protein. PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing of chelate batches is a further guarantee of their GMO free status. In addition, MAACs meet the new maximum limits for heavy metals and dioxins in feed additives.
