 C&H Nutrition

The C&H Nutrition range of alternative performance enhancers includes a unique, natural plant-derived additive and access to a range of protected organic acid combinations, some including essential oils.

Based on the natural plant alkaloid sanguinarine, Sangrovit is a proven highly effective digestive enhancer for pig, poultry and ruminant diets, offering the opportunity to boost feed intake and conversion efficiency. Trials show it to be highly effective in increasing feed value.

The primary action of Sangrovit centres on its ability to protect essential amino acids such as tryptophan from enzymatic breakdown in the gut. This means more amino acids are available to the animal, improving protein availability and carcass quality. Furthermore, tryptophan is known to influence the physiological regulation of feed intake, resulting in enhanced appetite. Additional benefits include a positive effect on saliva secretion rate – which improves feed pre-digestion – and the promotion of enzyme secretion in the digestive tract to help improve digestibility and feed conversion ratio.

Sangrovit is an easy to handle, dust free, micro-granular product with a pleasant aroma. Pelleting, extrusion and expansion have no negative effect on its stability.

C&H Nutrition is also the sole GB distributor for the range of non-antibiotic, functional animal feed ingredients from Soda Feed Ingredients. The company’s unique encapsulation techniques improve digestion efficiency by allowing targeted nutrient release all the way down ruminant and monogastric digestive tracts. All products are also available in Ireland through C&H sister company Brown and Gillmer Limited based in Co. Cork.

Danisco Animal Nutrition

A range of solutions from Danisco Animal Nutrition

Feed costs too high? Heat stress a problem? AGP-free nutrition a challenge?

These are just some of the challenges that Danisco’s Betafin feed betaine can help you solve.

To achieve lower feed costs, Betafin allows pig and poultry producers to reformulate the diet by removing all added choline chloride and some added methionine from the feed. Dietary energy levels can also be reduced without detriment to animal performance.

Under heat stress or disease conditions, Betafin is an osmolyte, which reduces dehydration. Trials have shown that Betafin improves gut structure, so improving nutrient absorption. This results in better and more uniform pig and poultry growth and feed conversion.

For increased breast meat in poultry or higher carcass lean yield in pigs, Betafin stimulates lean meat deposition. By helping the animal to maintain its water balance more efficiently, Betafin ensures more metabolic energy is made available to fuel lean growth.

Betafin, a natural feed supplement produced in a highly-purified form from sugar beet, provides pig and poultry producers with consistent animal performance thanks to its wide-ranging benefits.

Forum Products Ltd

Forum Products Ltd are distributors in the UK and Irish feed markets for Aromabiotic from Vitamex of Belgium. Based on a patented blend of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) derived from tropical plant sources, Aromabiotic can be provided to pigs and poultry through the feed and acts by controlling the balance of microflora in the intestine. In this way MCFA’s help to maintain a healthy and stable gut environment that allows animals to make maximum use of the nutrients in their feed. A more stable intestinal flora also results in less infection pressure on the animal’s immune system and ultimately less mortality.

Independent university and commercial evaluations have shown Aromabiotic to outperform previously available growth promoters, organic acids and alternative growth promoters. The product has been shown to be highly effective against a wide range of micro-organisms including E.coli, salmonella, campylobacter and clostridia. In addition, whereas the use of acetic and formic acids has been shown to increase the invasiveness of salmonella into intestinal tissue and organs of chickens, MCFA’s have been shown to prevent the invasion of salmonella organisms at much lower concentations than organic acids.

Aromabiotic, which is available in powder form or as a liquid, offers a proven alternative to antibiotic growth promoters and offers farmers safe and cost effective animal production.

Norel & Nature Nutrition

The need for alternative performance enhancers has long been the focus of Norel & Nature’s research activities; the two main contenders to replace antibiotic growth promoters – probiotics and organic acids – have been researched, developed and manufactured by Norel and Nature for nearly 20 and 30 years respectively.

We were only the 2nd company worldwide to produce volatile fatty acids: the GUSTOR range is based on specific combinations of organic acids and incorporate SODIUM BUTYRATE as a key ingredient. Continued investigations into more concentrated and odour-protected products to add to our range of slow-release, natural growth-promoters has led to the development of GUSTOR BP 70, targeting simultaneously the distal parts of the intestinal tract and exerting effective control on pathogens in both colon and caecum. This new presentation is one of several produced by Norel & Nature that masks the characteristic odour of the butyrate enabling easier application in feed mills which in turn allow higher flexibility in ration formulations.

GUSTOR is the only proven regenerator of intestinal microvilli; absorbed in the intestine and used both as an energy-yielding nutrient and in the metabolism of enterocytes as a trophic, restorative and invigorating element thereby increasing the absorption surface of the intestinal tract and maximizing the feed potential of the ingredients.

Several trials have shown that when GUSTOR is adequately combined with basic acidifiers the results in piglets and growers can be described as having a triple action: an acidifier + bacteriostatic /bactericide + growth promoter effect, as well as excellent compatibility and synergy with some commonly used antibiotics in countries where their use is still permitted.

Our probiotic range includes – living bacteria that is used with the intention of establishing a desirable environment for beneficial microflora to compete with deleterious bacteria within the small and large intestine. Through competitive inhibition and modification of intestinal pH, Fecinor increases the development of desirable health promoting microorganisms that improve weight gain and feed efficiency. To be effective, the microorganisms should be established as normal inhabitants of the intestinal tract of health animals and they must be acid and bile-tolerant to survive passage through the stomach to become established in the small intestine; Fecinor possesses these traits.

Fecinor’s agility in proliferation along with the capacity to fix it at the same epithelial receptors (loci) that pathogenic microorganisms need, promotes the presence of an intestinal ‘protective barrier’. This barrier improves the absorption capacity and enzyme production.

The high production of lactic acid produced by Fecinor reduces the pH at intestinal level mainly in the farthest intestinal portions when pathogenic proliferation can originate; besides this the intestinal acid pH assists the proliferation of lactic bacteria.

Fecinor (Enteroccocus faecium) requires important quantities of nutrients for growth that reduces the availability of easily fermentable nutrients needed for survival by the pathogens.

The high multiplication rate, barrier effect and lactic acid production are the most important mechanisms used by Fecinor to improve the intestinal comfort and act as competitive exclusion. Lactic acid production reduces the pH and promotes the secretion of endogenous enzymes e.g. the transformation of pepsinogen to pepsin, improving protein digestibility.

The lactic acid bacteria are also directly related to the secretion of pancreatic enzymes and are related to the energy metabolism of the intestinal flora; with reduced digestibility of the starch then there will be an increase of starch at caecal level that could be beneficial to the pathogenic microorganisms. When the starch level in the substrate is reduced the lactic bacteria acid are able to use other carbohydrates as an energy source (e.g. oligosaccharides) that the pathogenic populations do not metabolize.

One consequence of banning the antibiotic like growth promoters will be the increased use of medicated feeds and/or treatments. This will cause the elimination of an important part of the intestinal flora that will need rapid restoration.

The clear benefits of E. faecium Fecinor on the intestinal health in pigs and broilers can be assured by the fact that it has obtained definitive registry in the EU. Results of EU trials indicated that Fecinor is the way to improve the intestinal health in young animals, such as piglets or broilers, which have a very fast intestinal transit time, so they need probiotics that act swiftly against pathogens present in the small intestine.

Nor-Feed A/S

Plants possess a number of defense mechanisms against insects and microorganisms, some of which involve polyphenolic metabolites e.g. tannins, flavonoids and others. To use such compounds effectively, plants have developed physiological mechanisms that balance inhibitory concentrations and modes of action to minimise selection pressures for resistance. In this way the efficacy of this selection of active elements is maintained. It has been suggested that these compounds may offer alternatives to chemical and antibiotic antimicrobials in the field of animal nutrition where substitutes for the chemical growth promoters are required.

Nor-Feed A/S has developed a botanical product - Cabanin CS Powder - in which this balance is utilized. It is based on a unique synergistic combination of elements from citrus-fruits, chestnut and grape whose efficacy has been confirmed by trials in six European countries, in feeds for pigs at different stages of production. The trial results have confirmed that effects on average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion (FCR) are such that Cabanin offers a commercially viable alternative to antibiotic growth promoting agents. Results from one of the trials are shown below.

Pancosma

Pancosma SA has recently launched a separate web-site for its XTract range of feed additives. The site address is www.xtract.cc.

XTRACT Dairy is the first product to be featured. It will be followed by XTract for Calves, for Pigs and for Poultry.

XTract products contain specially selected micro-encapsulated active substances naturally occurring in aromatic plants and spices. They all have proven effects in animal nutrition programmes.

Two main reasons are given for the growing interest in this form of product. Firstly it is due to nutritionists seeking solutions because of the impending removal of antibiotic growth promoters. Secondly because more and more independent data confirms their efficacy and economic worth in a wide range of feeding systems.

According to François Gautier, Director of Pancosma Bioactive division, the impetus to create a stand-alone XTract site came from an increasing awareness by the livestock producer of the potential commercial benefits of the XTract products.

The approach therefore has been to present the information in a style which demonstrates to the farmer how he can use XTract in his feeding programme and the extra production he can expect. Already XTract is the choice of several of the largest integrated broiler producers globally.

Should more background scientific data be of interest there is a link to the main Pancosma site (www.pancosma.com) and to another site, www.plant.xt.com, which will come on stream early in 2006.

François Gautier also confirms that the demand for XTract is just as great outside the EU as inside – a clear demonstration, he says, of the nutritional value of such a plant extract based product.

SCA NuTec

SCA NuTec has a range of performance enhancers, all of which are marketed with technical support. The products cover all species; ruminants, pigs, poultry, equine and pets. Emphasis is placed on research and development, quality control and innovation. Included in the range are:

Biacid Biacid is a well-researched additive for broiler and turkey diets. It is based on a synergistic blend of organic acids and essential oils for direct addition to feed or for including in the vitamin mineral premix.

In trials, Biacid has been shown to result in similar performance in broilers to an antibiotic growth promoter. Organic acids and essential oil components are known to encourage feed intake and efficient digestive function. Through a strong bacteriostatic action in feed they will also indirectly help prevent excessive proliferation of the bacteria in the bird’s small intestine and the colonisation by pathogenic bacteria. Together, this will aid optimal feed digestibility and help maintain performance. Biacid is used at 1kg per tonne in starter and grower diets and 0.75kg in finisher diets. Available as a free flowing powder in 25kg multi-walled paper sacks.

Nustart NuStart is a natural gut conditioning package, non GM and free from antibiotic digestive enhancers. Developed for ruminants, it works by enhancing rumen development and feed intake. The result is better growth rates for lambs and calves.

Nustart includes a blend of essential oils derived from herbs and spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon and garlic. Certain essential oil components have known appetite, digestive and gastric benefits. NuStart also contains a functional fibre to encourage rumen development and boost dry food intake, and the prebiotic Profeed® which provides energy to the beneficial bacteria. Nustart can be included in milk replacers and premixes for early diets.

Tranzone SCA Tranzone is a pig nutritional programme that includes a package of purpose-designed acidulants, essential oil components and functional fibres. It has been developed through Provimi’s international research programme in response to major changes in the industry. SCA Tranzone is included in all SCA piglet diets and is available via premixes and concentrates for home mixers. The aim is to provide gut protection from birth through the post-weaning phase and onto slaughter.

Research work has shown that pigs fed and managed on products using SCA Tranzone make a smoother transition through weaning and continue on a higher plane of feed intake and growth rates right through to finishing weights.
